I had a urinalysis performed a week ago and the result was normal. i had a stringy brown discharge/blood (small amount) that came in my urine a day before my period began (not when wiping). is this normal?

If your urinalysis was normal than chances are the discharge came from the vagina and seemed to come from urine as it is sometimes hard to distinguish. If it persists see your MD

Most likely the source of that was pre-period as opposed to the urine in the bladder. Normally if you had blood in the urine you would have other symptoms such as frequency urgency and /or pain
