Active herpes I or II in a "cold sore" can be transmitted to any mucosal surface (mouth, genitals), or break in continuity of skin, such as a "rash". Once transmitted, the virus attaches to the nucleus of cells, and will not "die", but episodes can be treated with antiviral medications.
