A diagnosis of LHON is based on ophthalmologic findings & this includes specialized visual testing. Molecular genetic testing for mitochondrial genes which are associated with LHON can be used for confirmation of the diagnosis. LHON is caused via mutations in mitochondrial DNA & is transmitted only by maternal inheritance. Genetic counseling may help with your concerns. I wish you well!
