Healthy life style: Preventive measures may include but not limited to: maintaining ideal weight, avoiding prolonged standing and tight clothing that constricts waist, groin or legs; no crossing legs while sitting, avoiding wearing high heels and eating low-salt diet that is rich in high fiber food to reduce retention of water. Discuss with ur doctor to asses true risk and need for further intervention.

Veins and Hereditary: You are correct in that there is a strong genetic relationship with varicose veins. Prevention steps or delaying steps would include keeping physically fit, keeping the weight done and wearing support hose. Knee length support hose 20-30mmHg would be of benefit. Also see a vein specialist for a venous evaluation to assess the status of your saphenous vein valves.
