A member asked:

Do cbc results help to determine if high psa is from bph or cancer? is flank pain associated and drops of blood in urine (one time) associated with bph or cancer (or kidney)? 53 yr. old healthy male with psa of 5.3 (all other bloodwork normal?

A CBC looks at different areas not associated with the prostate. A normal one can be present in normal health and is possible with prostate cancer. Blood in the urine can come from many things including a kidney stone. He needs to follow-up with his doc. His PSA is not excessively high and many normal men have even higher PSA tests.

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, CBC results cannot differentiate between BPH and prostate cancer. Blood in urine does warrant an in-person evaluation. Wish you good health!
