Years ago the procedure was done with a gauge put directly on the eyeball. It produced accurate results but was invasive. The current procedure using a puff of air is safe & effective when done by those trained in the procedure.

There are many ways of measuring intra-ocular pressure. Most ophthalmologists (M.D.'s) use a direct contact method (applanation or Tonopen) while many/most optometrists (O.D.'s) use an "air-puff" technique. There are some reasons for choosing one method vs. another but they are all safe and relatively accurate when used correctly. Dilation may affect the measurements, but does affect the safety.
