Two formulas of Metoprolol: Metoprolol tartrate or Metoprolol succinate. Metoprolol tartrate (short acting), usually given twice a day, not once daily. If your Rx is one a day, it's better to take in AM. Metoprolol succinate (long acting), one a day and you can take either AM or PM.

The time of day depends on the dosing instructions. If it’s once-daily metoprolol (metoprolol succinate), then it may be taken at any time of the day as long as it is taken at about the same time every day. If it’s taken twice a day (metoprolol tartrate), then it should be spaced out by 10-12 hours as much as possible. It may be taken with or without meals.
