I recently had a liver function test and the results showed i have liver damage. i'm wondering what i can take as a pain reliever. i've read that acetaminophen is horrible for the liver, but my doctor said it was fine to take. is it?

You still can take Acetaminophen at a reduced dose. A maximal daily dose less than 2 gm a day in divided doses is allowed.

The old thinking is that acetaminophen is a bad idea in liver damage, and that was based on theory more than reality. Your doctor is correct in that it *may* be fine to take, but s/he does need to provide you with guidance concerning how much you should lower the dose, taking the liver damage into account. That plus keeping in touch with him/her about how you respond are the important parts.
