A member asked:

If someone were to have oral and genital herpes would they both typically flare up at the same time when having outbreaks or would they activate individually at random. assuming that you were only positive for one strain in both regions?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Oral and genital HSV lesions may occur simultaneously or individually, as they are slightly different serotypes, and both activated by stress, causing circulating virus to enable HSV ulcers. Basically HSV I and HSV II are co-existent varieties of the same virus.
