How do you know that there is no bowel sound? Absent bowel sound means ileus (small bowel paralysis) which is usually manifested with abdomen distention with pain & discomfort, nausea and vomit. Yes, if small bowel is paralyzed there will be no bowel movement. If you do not have any other symptoms, your small bowel is still moving and bowel sound should be present.
