A member asked:

My brother had a bile duct obstruction caused by a gallstone. he was given ercp treatment 25 days after his first symptoms. he is doing fine since then. just want to know, are 25 days too long a time taken for the treatment or is it normal?

Likely, the bile duct obstruction was not typical at onset; he might have just pain (biliary colic) without evidence of obstruction by ultrasound. ERCP is considered an invasive procedure so it is only done with absolute indication. Fortunately, your brother has recovered well.

I'd say this. 25 days sounds a bit longer than may be typical, however, there may be other underlying circumstances. Someone may have pain but it takes awhile before correct diagnosis is made. Many stones that are small enough may pass on their own. Their can be complicating factors like infection, pancreatitis, etc. that need addressing. The important thing is he's now doing better!
