A member asked:

Your view on steroid shots for l5s1 arthritis? are typical nsaid meds continued at the same time for when the shots wear off? or should meds be taken between shots and how long do they generally last. if they last 3mo 4 a year safe to have?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

In my opinion, epidural steroid injections should be reserved for specific nerve root compression causing lumbosacral radiculopathy and should not be routinely used for "arthritis". Would also avoid chronic NSAID's due to adverse effects. Analgesics are not the answer, especially at age 37. Instead, seek a physiatrist and get involved in a rehab program.
