During the acute phase of diverticulitis it's best to follow a soft, low residue diet which would contain no undigestible fiber,seeds,etc. Well cooked digestible fiber may be tolerated. Very ill hospitalized patients may be kept NPO(nothing by mouth) or on liquids only by mouth until signs and symptoms improve.
