Variable: Some children utter words before a year of age. Others particularly boys, who speak later than girls, may not speak until 3 years of age and still be normal. As long as other developmental milestones are normal such as sitting and walking, usually not problem. My stepson did not talk until 3 years of age, was extremely smart, finished engineering degree in college, and now does not stop talking.
