My hunch is you have gum disease. Flossing should help in the long run. Discuss with your dentist.

Vigorous use of any dental instruments may cause damage in the very long run, but gingival recession is usually caused by periodontitis. When was your last dental exam and cleaning? Dental care is not just a mouthful of toothpaste. Have your local dentist examine you to determine the cause of your recession.
