Flossing: Brushing and flossing properly will not cause damage to teeth or gums unless- you do it improperly, use too hard a bristle toothbrush, or do it excessively. You should brush 2-3 times a day and floss 1-2 times a day. Ideally after all meals and snacks, especially if you find food getting caught in or around your teeth. Your own dentist should have you demonstrate how you brush/floss and advise you

Flossing: Flossing correctly by gently passing the floss between the teeth to remove bacteria and debris will not harm your teeth or gums. Flossing incorrectly by snapping the floss down hard through the contact, and impacting food and bacteria into the gum as well as traumatizing the tissue can cause damage over time.
