A member asked:

If a small piece of food goes down the wrong way (respiratory) and get stuck down there, what happens to the food if you don't surgically remove it? will it stay stuck or melt and become phlegm?

The lung has good defenses, but if lodged in the airway, pneumonia may occur. You may have swallowed it, and drinking non acidic fluids and yogurt may be helpful. Follow up with your PCP. Watch for fever and cough.
