Safety is relative, as are all things in life. Toddlers explore their world and "eat" things. That's what they do, and we parents have no idea what some of the things they nibble on are. We vaccinate babies and toddlers for Hepatitis A and B, and then not worry about their accidental contacts with stool or blood. There are essentially no other "edible" blood infections in the US that worry us.
