High platelets are seen in inflammatory states, such as infections or cancers, other times they accompany bleeding, aside from blood disorders and should only be interpreted in proper clinical context. She should follow up with her doc until the source is found.

How high? All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, iron deficiency is one cause, inflammation is another, after that it may have more serious implications that warrant investigation. Wish you and your mother good health!
