A member asked:

Had a bad fall landing on my wrist xrays didnt show any breaks but the dr wants me to see hand specialist because of large gap between two of hand bones and mentioned scapholunate diastasis possible. what are the tests to confirm that & what is it?

Agree with your doctor. The wrist is quite complex and small injuries to bones or tendons can be tough to visualize initially. Appears that an abnormality has already been detected. A hand specialist is quite appropriate. Trust you currently are wearing a supportive wrist brace.

It is essentially a tear of the scapholunate ligament giving rise to instability of the carpal bones. Can progress to the point of scapholunate collapse with associated degenerative arthritis. X ray shows a gap between the bones and abnormal rotation. Next step is an exam by a hand surgeon and possible mri or mri arthrogram.
