It is essentially a tear of the scapholunate ligament giving rise to instability of the carpal bones. Can progress to the point of scapholunate collapse with associated degenerative arthritis. X ray shows a gap between the bones and abnormal rotation. Next step is an exam by a hand surgeon and possible mri or mri arthrogram.
