New exercise programs can be taxing on the body if started too abruptly. Side effects like muscle cramps, burning in the chest and pain with breathing can all be common of an exercise regimen that did not ramp up slowly. Try cutting back on time, distance or speed and slowly build up to more aggressive levels over several months. As your body builds muscle and cardio endurance, symptoms decrease.
