A member asked:

Are my lungs permanently damaged for life after acute bronchitis?

Permanent damage from bronchitis depends on the degree of infection and the type of organism causing it. Viral bronchitis is generally not a cause of permanent damage, but recent studies of "long term" respiratory effects from COVID-19 infection reveal respiratory effects which at this point have not been assessed for duration.

Most acute bronchitis infections are self limited and do not cause chronic lung disease. The majority are related to viral and/or bacterial infections. Continue to watch for symptoms of chronic cough and sputum production.
