Rabies is a fatal, acute, progressive encephalitis introduced by a wide variety of animals throughout the world. The usual mode of transmission is inoculation of saliva from the bite of a rabid animal. Although dogs are the main reservoir in developing countries they are a rare source of rabies in the USA (where bats are the major cause of concern). I don't think you have anything to worry about.
