What does it mean mildly reduced hyolaryngeal excursion mean on a swallow study?

A swallow study looks at the function of your esophagus as you swallow. The area around the level of your voice box or larynx was the area mentioned in the result to have a mildly reduced function. Check with your doctor who ordered the test to see if there are any further recommendations.

It has to do with the pharyngeal phase of swallowing, where food is pushed down with the help of small muscles opening the upper esophageal sphincter. A reduced hyolaringeal excursion suggests a weak reflex and high likelihood of dysphagia or difficulties swallowing.
