So called "cold sores" are called such b/c when "colds" occur (adenoviral infections), herpes virus is also activated inside cells, producing release of herpes virus into the bloodstream, causing painful ulcers. Herpes is very contagious, and should be cause to avoid contact with children. Hand washing and reducing contact with others while an ulcer is present, is recommended.
