For past 10 or so years ive had maybe outbreak 6-8 x can it passed to grandchild 3 yrs or older by holding them or holding hand is is contagious if no cold sore? my son doesnt want me holding or being close to grandchild?

So called "cold sores" are called such b/c when "colds" occur (adenoviral infections), herpes virus is also activated inside cells, producing release of herpes virus into the bloodstream, causing painful ulcers. Herpes is very contagious, and should be cause to avoid contact with children. Hand washing and reducing contact with others while an ulcer is present, is recommended.
