Antabuse and Naltrexone work differently to control excessive drinking. Both require you to be detoxified from alcohol You must be off alcohol for at least 5 days before starting naltrexone. This drug actually takes away craving for alcohol and when used in conjunction with therapy has a good success rate in the motivated patient. Antabuse works on the basis of negative feed back, the pt gets sick
