Not likely: Tonsillectomies are done regularly without complications. As with all surgeries, there is always some risk involved, but overall, this is a safe and common surgery.

Tonsillectomy: Agree that it is safe. Any unilateral swollen tonsil that has not responded to antibiotics should absolutely be biopsies with excision. Must rule out a squamous cell cancer or lymphoma.
