A member asked:

If youve been diagnosed with hashimotos and have a large goiter, a thyroidectomy would cure the disease right? after all, theres no thyroid left for the immune system to attack right?

Thyroidectomy is not the mainstay of treatment of Hashimoto thyroiditis. The goiter usually shows some decrease in size. The surgery carries another risk, e.g. losing parathyroid gland and damage to recurrent laryngeal nerve.
