A member asked:

I know that consuming antibiotics can cause c.diff infection. i hv heard that an antibiotic is an antibiotic be it oral or topical. so, can topical antibiotic ointments or antibiotic iv/injection or antibiotic ear/eye drops activate c.diff infection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Oral and intravenous antibiotics are absorbed systemically and can cause C dif. Topical antibiotics (eye, skin, vaginal, on gums, in ear) do not get systemically absorbed and are very unlikely to cause C dif.
