I just got some pathology back from a cyst aspiration. exact words "colorless cloudy/ gram stain no bacteria observed rare neutrophils/ culture result no growth after 3 days." can you please help me interpret, esp. the rare neutrophils part? thanks?

These are normal for a cyst aspirate that is not infected. Rare means there are not a lot of neutrophils. Maybe one every other microscopic field depending on the definition by the pathologist who read the gram stain. Many neutrophils would indicate an infection. So a good report that you must discuss with your Drs.

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, there is no cause for concern, rare neutrophil is not abnormal. Wish you good health!
