A MRI may or may not show reasons for problems with the maximal nerve. it is a small nerve. It can show a mass, or obstruction that can contribute to a problem with the nerve. The best way to evaluate the nerve after an examination is with electrodiagnostic studies

If there was facial trauma, a better way to visualize is via a CAT scan of the facial bones. MRI might be better looking at brainstem structures and base of brain, but not necessarily will it demonstrate problems with nerves branches over the face.
