Anterior disc displacement leading to TMJ will cause facial pain, interfere with chewing, and in rare cases can lead to facial muscular changes on the affected side. Depending on the cause, manipulation, physical, therapy and orthotics may allow the disc to move back into place. Occasionally surgery may be needed to stabilize the disc, but only after more conservative attempts fail to benefit.
