A member asked:

Wife is 37 weeks pregnant, tested positive for gbs. we are pretty freaked out but it seems to be common. whats the best option should she have a c-section?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

GBS in the female genital tract will be found in up to a 3rd of pregnancies, can be transient & is usually managed without C-section. The common protocol in the US is to administer IV antibiotics that kill GBS during labor and monitor the infant after delivery, Oral antibiotics during pregnancy do not effectively remove the germ. This protocol is quite effective in avoiding GBS in the baby.
