A member asked:

Does a cystoscope for an adult male intended for ureteral stent removal have to be a certain gauge for functionality? wondering why they aren't made narrower for less urethral and psychological irritation/damage?

The cystoscope size for removal is dependent on the size of the ureteral stent that was originally placed. It needs to be wide enough to encompass the stent in order to prevent tissue damage to the inside walls of the ureter and urethra. Talk to your Dr about using valium or another sedative in order to make this less psychologically difficult.

stent removal can be done in the office using a flexible cystoscope. These are rather small compared to the rigid scopes that might be used in the operating room. In general the flexible scopes are 5-6 mm in diameter.
