During sleep, the heartrate does decrease up to 20% or more. But if you are waking up with a racing heart, it may be due to factors such as dehydration, drinking alcohol the night before, sleep apnea, too much caffeine during the day, uncontrolled diabetes, stimulant medications, anemia and hyperthyroidism. Talk to your Dr about this issue. They can take a thorough history and do a complete exam.
