A member asked:

Is nexplanon a safe birth control option if you are age 43, with history of pulmonary embolism when taking birth control pill 10 years ago, no clotting disorders. will it increase risk for a second clotting episode since its progestin only?

Nexplanon is not a safe option for someone who has had a PE. Because it contains estrogen, it is considered a risk for developing other blood clots. A better alternative for you would be a non hormonal IUD (copper), Diaphragm, Male Condom, spermicidal gel, or female condom. Talk to your local doctor or family planning clinic to explore these options.
