A placental location slightly overlying the cervical canal can separate and cause a clot to occur, but a "placental abruption" which may influence the course of the pregnancy is unlikely. The majority of the placenta is apparently functioning normally, and has by far enough redundancy to preserve continuity of the pregnancy. With bleeding stopped, the MFM MD is correct.
