Very different (but look very similar). Oral leukoplakia is a pre-malignant process on the tongue that is easy to confuse with oral thrush. Oral HAIRY leukoplakia is a benign lesion of the tongue often associated with EBV infection and HIV infection. Oral thrush is a yeast infection - looks similar to the other 2 but quite different. Oral thrush is a yeast infection which can present as a white patch. A leukoplakic or white lesion has many forms in color, shape, or texture. Hairy leukoplakia often occurs on the sides of tongue , like overgrown taste buds. It is common in positive HIV cases but so is thrust . Other viruses can display similar signs and symptoms .
