Depends on how much smoking and for how long. No real “tar” in bronchi or trachea but there are abnormalities of bronchial and tracheal function plus deposition of various carcinogenic (cancer producing) materials. These clear at various rates - earliest after several months, latest over many years. Other effects (poor circulation) may also take years to correct
