At 13 the adolescent would have impacted wisdom teeth (under the gumline). Depending on where the rudimentary teeth are located and their angulation, there may be a need to monitor their position on a yearly basis. If removed before the roots are formed there would be less of a chance of inferior alveolar nerve damage. Not sure why surgery was recommended.

Wisdom teeth, at age 13, are still developing, under the gums, and more difficult to reach in the still developing adolescent jaws. Sometimes they can be blocking eruption of 12 year molars. at other times they can be anomalously placed and/or developing. The appropriate thing to do is ask your General Dentist or our child's Orthodontist to examine/x-ray/advise. Referral to Oral Surgeon is next.
