A difficult scenario: Reimplantation of teeth can besuccessful if the apex of the root is not closed and healthy tissue grows with blood vessels back into the pulp chamber. More commonly root canal therapy would be required. You and the dentist need to wait and see and check frequenly. Be of a forgiving heart, the dentist has suffered a great emotional trauma, and so has your family.

Watchful waiting: Dr. McCloud's advice is sound. I would, however, schedule your son with a preimplantation specialist, an Oral Surgeon, and a root canal specialist, an Endodontist, to establish current baselines. The team will have to be aware of devitalization, internal and/or external resorption, rejection, ankylosis, periapical bone loss, etc.
