Old crown was leaking & removed. this was a cavity under crown that was fixed. crown prep done. lots of drilling. temp crown put on. tooth really hurts. root canal not indicated right now. how long should tooth hurt after all this?

Varies: Varies from patient to patient, even tooth to tooth. If the pain is subsiding over a few days you should be fine. If the pain is the same and intensifying, then root canal therapy is indicated before the final restoration is placed. This happens when the carious lesion is deep... the nerve inside the tooth gets traumatized.

Probably ,you do need Root Canal-treatment if the tooth is still hurting with same intensity 24 hours after placing Temporary Crown ,do not proceed for Final Crown without Root Canal treatment on the tooth.
