I had a deep cavity and a deep cleaning same tooth. the gums hurt on and off 2 months after, is this normal or is a root canal needed?

2 months? Not normal: Some degree of pain is normal for at most a few days, not months, after a deep cleaning and removal of deep decay. If your bite on that tooth is normal, then see your dentist for a thorough evaluation. As you wrote, you may need root canal treatment.

See your dentist: See your dentist. There are different possibilities for what it can be and only a dentist can give you a good differential diagnosis.

Not normal: No, it's not normal and should be evaluated. There are many possible causes, perhaps multiple ones and perhaps more than one tooth is involved. You don't necessarily need rct. Your own dentist can determine what's wrong and what treatment is indicated.
