I went to the gynae for a checkup and she had done a transvaginal ultrasound. when she performed this she was unable to see my ovaries. it was not visible. is this possible?

Quite possible: Vaginas are variable in length so ovaries can be missed by transvaginal ultrasound. You have ovaries if you menstruate and have breast development. Blood estrogen level can help to convince presence of ovaries. Laparoscopy is not necessary just to prove whether or not ovary/ies present.
