Pain : I have seen over 20,000 patients with spinal pain. MRI findings do not dictate a patient's symptoms or outcomes as much as a physical examination. I have seen patients with a normal spine MRI disabled and another with a horrible MRI without symptoms doing heavy labor. Don't focus on the MRI. The longer harder road of physical therapy, conditioning, intermittent traction losing weight often works.

Pain management: Dr Romano provides guidance. I would add some additional interventions, such as physical therapy in a warm water pool, use of acupuncture and biofeedback, learning the McKenzie exercise protocol, finding a therapist who can utilize a "Red Cord" therapy program. Maybe have evaluation for a rehab program in a local medical school.
