Beau's lines: Deep horizontal ridges in the toenails are called Beau's lines and they may indicate nutritional deficiencies (many people see them develop during an illness where their food intake went way down). It may also be a sign of Diabetes or kidney problems. If you have any other symptoms, lightheadedness between meals, extreme thirst, constant urination, or urine problems, talk to your Dr for testing.

Dermatologist: Vertical nail ridges are not serious, but horizontal ones are often related to old pathology. A dermatologist can evaluate and advise you as well as order any appropriate tests if deemed advisable.
