This is common: The problem is that anxiety begets anxiety, and the more anxious we become, the less able we are to think, which makes us more anxious. I think it's true that math, like music, chess, some arts, and athletics has a strong genetic component. But, all of us (unless there is another handicap present), have enough ability to learn basic math. Find a patient tutor and practice, practice, practice!

Yes, A Real Thing: Math anxiety isn't specific medical diagnosis but as a situation-specific anxiety state. I see it as akin 2a phobia that may trace back 2 a stressful/traumatic experience at school &/or that may be related 2an underlying learning difference (e.g., specific memory problem; dyscalculia-math equivalent of dyslexia;etc). A neuropsychologist can evaluate/document it in context of a broader assessment.
