Hyperventilation?: If you are truly hyperventilating, which causes a drop in carbon dioxide, you will feel better by re-breathing some of your air: this is commonly done by breathing in and out for a minute or so into a paper (not plastic) bag. Have other causes been excluded? Have you had a chest x-ray, d-dimer, bnp, tsh, hgb, echocardiogram? Did you have full pulmonary function tests? Your diffusing capacity?

Breathless: Agree with Dr. Werner. Has a organic cause been medically rule out? If you have an anxiety disorder - the Xanax treats the symptoms but not the causes. Talk to your doctor about psychotherapy and possibly a SSRI.

Anxiety: I'm glad you & your doctor are working together to diagnose your anxiety problem -- sounds like you're checking diagnostic tests to be sure lungs and other things are healthy. Xanax (alprazolam) alone may not prevent anxiety attacks, and will probably cause sedation before full relief of generalized anxiety disorder (if present). Please consider seeing a psychiatrist for specialized evaluation and treatment.
