Too early?: HCG is produced by the placenta in pregnancy. HCG varies between 25 mIU/mL and 7500 mIU/mL during the first 7 weeks. It differs in each pregnancy. Home pregnancy tests will be positive on the first day of your missed period. If you check again in one week and see the HCG is up past 500, it may indicate that your dates were off. Talk to your OB Dr about an ultrasound which can detect the sac.
