A member asked:

I recently heard of a healthy women that had a placenta detachment during labor with her third baby. she and baby almost died. i'm terrified of this happening to me now, i'm 21.5 weeks pregnant. what are the chances of this happening to me?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Low: The cited frequency of placental abruption (detachment) is ~1% with about 1/10 being life threatening. In comparison your basic risk of an unexpected outcome in any pregnancy, including all such issues is ~4%. Modern prenatal care & good communication with your delivery team limit your risks & increase favorable outcome. I would focus more on preparing for a new kid in the house.
